Catheter ablation is a viable alternative to conventional medical therapies
Catheter ablation fulfills many currently unmet needs in the management of Afib. It directly addresses its physiological basis and is thus potentially curative (ref. 14, 15). Consequently, it generally eliminates or significantly reduces pharmacological burden. Combined with new imaging techniques and specialized catheters, catheter ablation has now evolved into a routine procedure at specialized centers.
By studying the electrical basis of the cardiac arrhythmias giving rise to Afib, electrophysiologists have a primary role in its treatment. Electrophysiologists can determine which patients are most appropriate for catheter ablation and who would benefit the most.
